Serpent à Plume

Serpent à Plume was built on the basis of one word: style. A stone’s throw from Maison Victor Hugo in the romantic Place des Vosges, inside is a cave (literally) of glamorous cocktails and culture. Wind your way down its set of green glass stairs, and your eyes will meet space age interiors alongside fashionable staff – all of whom look like they’ve just returned from a Wes Anderson film set. This is one of Paris’ top underground spots, and after visiting, you’ll definitely have a story to tell.

Le Peloton Café

Freshly roasted coffee spots aren’t a huge thing in Paris, but there is at least one in each neighbourhood, and in the 4th, it’s Le Peloton. Directly translated as “the pack”, it’s aimed at Paris’ community of cyclists who, after daily rides together, stop off here to unwind over a (very) good cup of coffee. The team here are English-speaking, so it’s a perfect place to meet fellow expats, and if you’re interested in cycling, be sure to check out the company’s riding programme. Coffee, conversations and an active community – what’s not to love?

Stolly’s Stone Bar

Nestled on a quiet side street just off the central Rue de Rivoli, Stolly’s Stone Bar is the place to go for a beer among Paris’ hippest locals. It’s only small inside, but boy, is it charming. Old brick walls construct the dimly-lit space, within which stylish sounds from alternative punk and rock bands play. The people that run this place have good taste, and a trip here is guaranteed to bring you some much needed introductions – whether it be through the crowd or the music. Best of all, Le Marais is on your doorstep to supply even more stylish spots afterwards.

L’As du Fallafel

Did you know that Paris is famed for its Falafel’s? Rue des Rosiers is booming with businesses dedicated to the Middle Eastern dish, and though it’s rare to find the street empty, a short queue is definitely worth the wait. Specifically, at L’As du Fallafel: a favourite for pretty much every Parisian thanks to its fresh array of ultra tasty kebabs, shawarma and Israeli wines. If you’re visiting for the first time, we suggest going for the golden dish: a traditional falafel filled with oriental flavours and spicy sauce. Definitely worth the hype.

Le Pigalle Hotel

A short walking distance down from Pigalle station sits Le Pigalle Hotel, AKA: the favoured temporary residence for Paris’ most stylish visitors. Playing host to languid rooms (offered at a respectful price point), a downstairs library to delve into some seriously good literature and an incredibly stylish lobby, it has everything you could ask for in a fashionable hotel – and a great working spot if you live the freelance life. If you’re looking for some entertainment to fill your evening during a stay, the Moulin Rouge is practically its neighbour.

Hotel Amour

They say not to judge a book by its cover, but as you walk down the 9th’s Rue de Navarin, you can’t help but be drawn in by the luminous pink “amour” sign that hangs at number 8. It belongs to Hotel Amour which, fortunately, lives up to its half romantic, half kitsch exterior – and it’s the perfect spot for a romantic stay. For daytime visitors, head to the greenhouse-like courtyard for a glass of wine (and be sure to buy some of the hotel’s branded wine glasses for drinks in your own apartment afterwards).

Pigalle Country Club

Everyone who has been to Pigalle Country Club has a story to tell. Why? Because, as nightlife goes, it’s the only place in Paris’ booming Pigalle district which is open after 2AM, so everyone who’s anyone comes here for final drinks and final dances. The owner, Laurent, his own punk rock bank, so expect to hear a masterful mix of alternative tunes upon arrival. Just one piece of advice: make sure you’re wearing your best clobber, because the folk that flock here are incredibly stylish.

Le Mansart

Paris’ 9th arrondissement is known for its community of musicians (take a walk along Rue de Douai for evidence – guitar shops galore), and after working hours, the place you’ll find most of its players is Le Mansart. Titled after its street name, this is the place to go if you’re in search of a good beer, a good playlist and a good crowd. If you fancy a good meal between drinks, head to barbecue restaurant Flesh which is a stone’s throw away.
